Allagash Gateway Campsite may be reached by two routes:
(1) via the Maine Turnpike and Interstate 95 to Newport, taking Rt. 7 to Dexter and Guilford, Rt. 15 to Greenville, then follow signs to Lily Bay, Kokadjo and Ripogenus Dam. The distance from Greenville is about 44 miles, mostly dirt road; allow plenty of time.
(2) The other route is a bit longer but tarred intermittently to within 1 mile of the campground. Take Interstate 95 North to exit 244 in Medway, proceed via Route 157 to Millinocket, follow the signs to Baxter State Park. Approximately 8 miles out, you are traveling on the Golden Road, you will see North Woods Trading Post on the right and Katahdin Air on the left. Stay on the road to the left. We are 32.5 miles in on the Golden Road.
The Golden Road is very busy with logging trucks, please be aware these trucks are carrying tons, and yes, I mean tons of wood, it is very hard for them to stop as you can imagine so please take care while traveling and be prepared to stop or pull over.
